Internal Audit cannot issues notices directly to taxpayers: KTBA

KARACHI: Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) has said that Directorate General of Internal Audit cannot directly ask taxpayers to provide information and the same can only be asked from the concerned officers holding jurisdiction.
The KTBA made these observations in its letter sent to Dr. Tariq Masood, Member Legal, FBR and said that the taxpayers had received notices from the directorate requiring information which they had already filed online at the time of filing of their tax returns or field officers during proceedings by the tax authorities.
“These notices are creating unrest among already compliant taxpayers and mistrust between taxpayers and revenue authorities besides extra time and efforts needed by them for making compliance of notices,” the KTBA said.
The KTBA said that it had held several meetings with the FBR members and it was agreed and they had assured such notices would not bee issued in the future.
The KTBA requested the Member Legal to look into the matter and issued necessary instructions to the directorate to approach respective field offices to obtain information of taxpayers for the purpose of inspection/investigation and not to issue notices directly to already complaint taxpayers.
